School Hearing Screen
We provide high-quality hearing screenings to schools across Sydney, helping teachers create an optimal learning environment where every student can hear, engage, and succeed. While we collaborate with NSW schools, we operate independently. Hearing checks should be as accessible as vision and dental checks. Our screenings help detect hearing issues early, improving student engagement, learning outcomes, and classroom teaching.
Support for Teachers and Parents:
We support teachers through personal development sessions and offer care beyond the hearing screen. Where a child requires further assessment, parents and teachers are not left to navigate this themselves, an appointment is arranged in clinic (at no cost).
No cost to schools:
The screen is free for the school and parent/guardian paid with a cost of $39 + GST per child.
Which students should have a hearing screen?
Learning relies on listening. All students would benefit from a hearing check. Where this is not possible, targeted screening is recommended for various groups, including:
-
Pre-School students (the year before they transition to school).
-
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 (high-risk group, we encourage schools to exclude hearing loss as a cause for any learning challenges).
-
Year 3-6 who are preparing for NAPLAN, opportunity classes (OC), Selective exams and transitioning to High School.
-
High School students are independent learners in dynamic and fast paced environments, hearing review is important.
-
Learning support students.
-
Children born overseas.
-
Any child with learning or behavioral challenges.
We encourage teachers and parents to consider regular hearing assessments for students to support their learning potential. This benefits both the child and their teacher.
What is a Hearing Screen?
Our hearing screen is a safe, non-invasive and reliable way to assess your student or child's hearing.
Our screen is performed by trained paediatric audiologists who will play a game with your child to assess their hearing. For older children, a simple "yes" response is used.
Otoscopy and tympanometry will also be performed (outer and middle ear check).
Your child will be out of class for approximately 15-20 min.
3-5 days following their screen a report will be emailed to you outlining your child's results.
